American Pie tends to play in stereotypes – but which of these teen cliches is the most likeable in the film?
American Pie is one of the most popular comedies of the ’90s and one that really connected with audiences – as much as it shocked others. The film started a wave of teen coming of age movies, but this truly was the one to start it all, and it’s the one that has remained incredibly popular to this day with new generations of movie-goers.
The film is has some timeless jokes, and quite a few that are painfully outdated now, which are almost all based around losing virginity. While it does follow the tropes of a classic High School film, with characters being slotted into their stereotypical positions of nerds and jocks and the like, they were easy to connect with and a lot of fun to watch.
Steve Stifler might bring a lot of funny moments to the series, but there is no doubt he is the least likeable out of all the main characters. While he might be popular at school, a lot of his friends actually find him to be very annoying and it’s clear a lot of people are only friends with him for the status and the large parties he throws.
He can be incredibly rude to others, especially Paul Finch, and that doesn’t exactly translate to him being a nice person. Of course, Stifler does have some redeeming qualities, as deep down he does care about his close friends, even if he only shows that in glimpses.
Vicky Lathum is one of the smarter characters within American Pie and is someone who is clearly well-liked by others. However, her presentation within the movie is often as someone who is quite angry and complains a lot, which doesn’t translate to being a very likeable character.
To her credit, a lot of her grievances are fair due to the way Kevin tends to behave. However, because Vicky doesn’t really unwind and relax like the other characters, she does come across as less likeable, especially since she doesn’t have too many funny moments either.
Heather is another of the major love interests in American Pie and while she doesn’t get quite as much attention as Vicky throughout the movie, she is certainly the more likeable character. Heather is well-grounded and knows what she wants and ensures that she thinks everything through before committing to anything.
She’s an intelligent character and that certainly comes across throughout the film. Heather is also funny when she gets the time on-screen and happily goes back and forth with Oz and the other boys, which makes her a lot of fun to watch.
Kevin Myers is the person who likes to organize everything within the group, and while that certainly does make him likeable as he clearly cares about his friends, he can be quite pushy. Deep down, Kevin is just a nice guy and he doesn’t cause any real problems, which makes him a likeable person.
However, he does become quite obsessed with the virginity pact, which he pushes onto Vicky and his friends to the point where everyone becomes frustrated with him. But, on the whole, he is a nice character who tries to help as much as he can.
Nadia isn’t in the film as much as some of the other main characters, but she certainly has a big impact on the movie. Being the girl that Jim is desperate to end up with, Nadia is someone who might seem like she could be unlikeable on the outside, but that isn’t the case.
Despite what people expect, Nadia is actually attracted to Jim, which leads to a lot of funny moments. However, she is a great character because of how kind she is to Jim and everyone else she interacts with.
Chris “Oz” Ostreicher
Chris “Oz” Ostreicher is a true romantic at heart and a real softie, despite the fact he is considered to be one of the traditional jocks in the school. He breaks the boundaries by being part of the choir, which isn’t something that anybody expects from the movie.
The fact that he is willing to take the risk of being a laughing stock in the school to try and win over Heather does make him incredibly likeable. He is someone who tries his best in all situations and that is why he’s such a nice guy.
Jessica is one of the funniest characters within American Pie which is mainly due to her dry sense of humor. She’s a very smart person and she comes across as someone who has a lot of life experience, which is why she’s able to provide such great advice.
Jessica might not get as much attention as some of the other characters, but she is hilarious, kind, and very intelligent. All of those traits really build together to make Jessica one of the most fun characters within the entire movie.
Paul Finch is the true dark horse of this movie. Quietly going about his business, seemingly doing very odd things all of the time, he is truly an outcast and while he might do some weird things, he is very likeable. Unlike the rest of the characters, he isn’t over the top with his push to lose his virginity, which is a redeemable quality.
Paul is kind to others and treats people with respect. He is incredibly intelligent and because he’s so much smarter than his friends, he is able to come up with some amazing one-liners against as comebacks. Plus, he truly gets one over on Stifler with his mom, which is a great moment.
What’s not to love about Michelle? From her epic band camp stories to how genuinely happy she is, Michelle just brings joy whenever she’s on-screen. There’s no doubt that she’s a little bit on the wild side, and she proves it is important not to judge a book by its cover, as Jim quickly learns.
The fun thing about Michelle is how unpredictable she is. Whenever she appears it is impossible to work out what she’s going to do next, and that is a lot of fun. But the main reason she is so likeable is because of how kind her heart is, with Michelle willing to go above and beyond for everybody.
Jim Levenstein is the lead character of this movie and someone who is instantly relatable. Out of his group of friends, Jim tends to be the most ‘normal’ and while he ends up in a lot of unfortunate circumstances, with his webcam striptease being a particularly embarrassing moment, he always bounces back.
While he longs to be with the school’s hottest girl, Jim quickly falls in love with Michelle, which is easily the best romantic story of the film. Jim is someone who never gives up and is always there to try and help others when possible, having a lot of likeable traits. Plus, his father is the funniest character in the entire film, which certainly helps.
