Growing up can be a bumpy road, and it’s no exception for Riley, who is uprooted from her Midwest life when her father starts a new job in San Francisco. Like all of us, Riley is guided by her emotions – Joy, Fear, Anger, Disgust and Sadness. The emotions live in Headquarters, the control center inside Riley’s mind, where they help advise her through everyday life. As Riley and her emotions struggle to adjust to a new life in San Francisco, turmoil ensues in Headquarters. Although Joy, Riley’s main and most important emotion, tries to keep things positive, the emotions conflict on how best to navigate a new city, house and school.

Docter began developing the project in 2009 after noticing changes in his daughter’s personality as she grew older. The film was first announced in 2011, and del Carmen subsequently became co-director after working on the animated film Up (2009). The film’s producers consulted psychologists Paul Ekman and Dacher Keltner, who helped revise the story by emphasizing the neuropsychological findings that human emotions affect interpersonal relationships, which were later substantially moderated to them. The film’s official title was revealed in 2013, with Poehler, Black, Kaling, Hader, and Smith were subsequently announced as the cast that same year. Production of the film lasted for five years.
