Outlander’s heroes aren’t always the most loved, although the villains are almost entirely hated!
Over the last five years, Outlander has introduced fans to a variety of characters. Some have been altruistic heroes, some have been menacing villains, and some have simply been created for a plot device. However, only a few have had a significant impact on the fans – and it’s not always in a good way.
With the show introducing several heroes, all fans will likely have a different favorite character. However, everyone tends to hate the same characters since there have been some villains who have committed some heinous and horrible deeds. Here are a couple of reasons why several characters are detested compared to those who are loved.
Hated: Roger MacKenzie
Surprisingly, one of the show’s most hated characters is Roger MacKenzie. It may be because the show lacks the depth the books have but a lot of people hate Roger because of his hypocritical morals. He has often degraded Brianna over sexuality despite having past relationships, tries to manipulate people for his own gain, and can be too overbearing.
He further infuriated fans when he hesitated to return to Brianna after learning of her sexual assault. Luckily, he had become a bit more tolerable in season 5, but fans would certainly say he isn’t a fan favorite.
Loved: Brianna MacKenzie
Although Brianna’s ignorance meant she got off on the wrong foot with fans, Brianna has slowly become one of their favorite characters. When the viewers first met Brianna, she was a naïve and close-minded young woman. Her relationship with Claire was also strained due to the backstory of her birth.
However, after Bree discovered the truth about Jamie, fans began to warm to her. They saw how kind and selfless she could be when she helped search for Jamie. How brave she was to travel back to the past to save her parents. Most of all, Brianna has become an empowering role model for her son and family. She’s definitely one of the best characters on the show now.
Hated: Duke of Sandringham
If there was one villain the fans were glad to see the back of, it has to be the conniving Duke of Sandringham. When fans first met him in season 1, fans were led to believe that he was going to be Jamie’s savior. However, it turned out that he was a duplicitous snake who would throw anyone under the bus to ensure that he would remain unscathed.
The fans’ hatred was further cemented for the Duke when it was revealed that he orchestrated the rape of Mary Hawkins and planned to have Claire attacked too. After he made everyone suffer, fans weren’t too bothered by his death. Murtagh did Jamie and Claire a huge favor.
Loved: Marsali Fraser
After Marsali was revealed to be the daughter of Laoghaire, fans hoped that the apple did end up falling far from the tree. At first, it did look like Marsali would be carrying on her mother’s grudge as she treated Claire with contempt. However, Marsali has gradually earned her place in the fans’ hearts through her romance with Fergus and loyalty to clan Fraser-MacKenzie.
Fans have also thoroughly enjoyed watching the familial bond grow between her and Claire, particularly as Marsali has grown very protective of her. It was great to see more of Marsali in season 5, so hopefully it will continue into the next one.
Hated: Stephen Bonnet
Another character that fans completely detested was Stephen Bonnet. Although Bonnet wasn’t on the show very long, the villain made himself known. He robbed Claire and Jamie, killed many of their friends, assaulted Brianna, and tormented Roger.
When it looked like the Fraser-MacKenzies were moving on with their lives, Bonnet caused them more pain when he kidnapped Brianna and attempting to sell her into slavery. He didn’t even show one ounce of remorse for his actions. When he died, fans could see that a weight was lifted off of everyone’s shoulders. That’s how bad his presence affected everyone.
Loved: Murtagh Fraser
Although Murtagh was only a supporting character, the Scotsman had managed to become a firm favorite. While the books had him die in the Battle of Culloden, fans were delighted to see him alive and well in America. Not only did the viewers love watching the bond between him and Jamie but also the relationship he had with Claire too.
Fans were even delighted to see him find happiness with Jocasta for a short while as they knew how much he wanted to settle down. However, the writers cruelly ripped that all away from him when he died at Alamance. To this day, fans are still mourning the loss.
If somebody asked the fandom what they thought about Laoghaire, they would be hard-pressed to find someone who had good things to say about her. The fans absolutely detest her. At first, Laoghaire came across all sweet and innocent. She was a little naïve and immature, but she seemed kind and respectful.
However, everything changed once Claire married Jamie. She became manipulative, spiteful, and extremely obsessed with Jamie. She tried to get to have Claire killed twice as well as Brianna. One would have thought she would have matured with age but it turns out the exact opposite happened. Fans will not be grieving for her once she dies.
Loved: Claire Fraser
It’s not surprising that Claire is highly rated as a fan-favorite character. The surgeon is one of the strongest and most empowering female characters on tv to date. Fans love that she is always challenging gender stereotypes and influencing other characters to be better.
They also admire the fortitude Claire has, especially in the face of tragedy and trauma. No matter what internal struggles she faced, it took real strength for her to find the courage to take on her enemies and protect her family. Not to forget her kind and compassionate nature. Claire is the type of person someone would love to have in their corner.
Hated: Captain Jack Randall
If there was one character who was completely detested by fans, it would have to be Captain Jack Randall. The man is probably the most despicable and sadistic character to ever grace TV. He took great pleasure in tormenting the clans and had a peculiar taste for murder.
He also partook in some of the most horrific and violent sexual assaults, including Jamie, Fergus, and almost Jenny. The man practically loved making everyone’s lives a misery. When he died at Culloden, no one mourned his death. If anything, everyone wished he had suffered more before he met his demise. That’s how much he was hated.
Loved: Jamie Fraser
Out of all the characters on the show, Jamie Fraser is probably the one with the largest fanbase. From the very beginning, Jamie managed to charm the fans through his kind and gentle nature. He also seemed to be very selfless and altruistic, always putting Claire and his family’s needs ahead of his own.
While Jamie is far from perfect, fans admire that he tries to learn from his mistakes to become a better husband and father. He just wants to do right by everyone and would do whatever it took to make them happy. He is one of the noblest characters to exist on tv today…
