Star Trek: Discovery showrunner Michelle Paradise confirms season 4 has officially wrapped production and even hints there could be more to come.
Star Trek: Discovery season 4 has officially wrapped production, and showrunner Michelle Paradise is already hinting at a potential season 5. Paramount+’s Star Trek Universe is expanding in many ways, with Picard in the midst of preparing season 2 and Strange New Words steadily approaching its debut. Amid the ever-evolving plans, Discovery remains the veteran of the group. As the first of the new generation of Trek shows, Discovery has steered the franchise into previously untapped areas, most notably with its recent season 3. The crew of the titular ship, led by Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green), entered the 32nd century and faced a whole host of new threats.
Production on Star Trek: Discovery season 4 has been underway since last fall, around the same time that season 3 started unspooling episodes on Paramount+. There was a slight hiccup back in April, when filming had to be shut down due to a crew member being exposed to COVID-19. The following month, Paradise confirmed all of the scripts for Star Trek: Discovery season 4 had been completed, and it looked like the series could wrap up filming by the end of summer.
On Monday, Paradise took to social media to confirm season 4 has officially wrapped. She included a picture of the Discovery set and thanked the cast and crew for pulling off “this challenging season.” Paradise then wrote that they are “turning off the lights and leaving the stages in good hands. Until next time…,” perhaps hinting that the series could be coming back for a season 5. You can see her full post down below.
Star Trek: Discovery wasn’t officially renewed for season 4 until just after season 3 began airing, so it still might be some time before any additional episodes are confirmed. The Star Trek shows remain Paramount+’s biggest draw, and while there are several more along the way, Discovery is arguably the one with the most stable audience. It has already run for 3 seasons, and a common refrain is that the most recent one was the best. With Discovery in such a good place, it wouldn’t be too surprising if it does end up being renewed for season 5. Of course, this doesn’t mean Paradise knows for sure whether the series will be renewed; she might also just be speaking optimistically.
Right now, the biggest question is still when Star Trek: Discovery season 4 will premiere. An early trailer suggested the series was slated for a late 2021 release, but as production has only just wrapped, it remains to be seen if that date still holds. Since Paramount+ follows a weekly release plan, Discovery season 4 could begin later this year and go well into 2022. One thing seems certain: It will arrive before Picard season 2. Fans will have to stay tuned for further updates about the Discovery crew.
