From Disney to Dallas to Days of our Lives – where else can you find the incredible cast of the classic show The Six Million Dollar Man?
In the 1970s, Steve Austin was the coolest and most handsome astronaut on television. The main character in The Six Million Dollar Man, he’s a cyborg-like man after undergoing surgery following a spaceship crash. The surgery recreates his body with machine parts, which enables him to have superhuman speed and strength. At its core, the show is about an extraordinary man who doesn’t hesitate to protect mankind.
Starring Lee Majors, the show had a talented cast. Many of the cast members have starred in other popular movies and TV shows that fans may have forgotten about. Who starred in the show? And, what else are they known for?
Lee Majors – The Big Valley
Before starring as Steve Austin on The Six Million Dollar Man, Lee Majors became a household name in the 1960s Western drama series, The Big Valley. The show takes place on the fictional Barkley Ranch in Stockton, California, set during the mid-to-late 1800s. Viewers met the Barkley family, led by the matriarch Victoria (Barbara Stanwyck), and her sons, Jarrod (Richard Long), Nick (Peter Breck), Heath (Majors), and her daughter, Audra (Linda Evans).
Majors memorably played the role of the illegitimate, rough but even-tempered Heath. His character started out as angry and aggressive, but Heath progressed as he was accepted by the Barkley family. He became a strong brother in the family, and fans rooted for him week after week.
Majors is also known for his roles as Roy Tate on The Virginian, Jess Brandon on Owen Marshall, Counselor at Law, and Colt Seavers on The Fall Guy.
Richard Anderson – Perry Mason
On The Six Million Dollar Man, Steve Austin is eventually hired as a secret agent for the OSI, a fictional office within the U.S. government. He works for Oscar Goldman, played by Richard Anderson. Before starring on the show, Anderson guest-starred in numerous television shows, including the 1960s legal drama, Perry Mason.
The show focuses on a Los Angeles criminal defense lawyer, Perry Mason (played by Raymond Burr), as he works with clients who were wrongly accused of murder. Anderson joined the show in the final season, playing Lieutenant Steve Drumm, a lead police official and homicide detective. Anderson was a recurring actor for 26 episodes, and it was a memorable performance.
Anderson is also known for playing D.A. Glenn Wagner on Bus Stop, Chief George Untermeyer on Dan August, Henry Towler on Cover Up, Chief Quinn in the 1956 film Forbidden Planet, Major Saint-Auban in the 1957 film Paths of Glory, and the narrator on Kung Fun: The Legend Continues.
Lindsay Wagner – The Bionic Woman
Lindsay Wagner was first introduced to viewers in The Six Million Dollar Man as Jaime Sommers, the Bionic Woman audiences would later know her as on the show’s spin-off series, The Bionic Woman. She’s a professional tennis player and romantic interest for Austin. But just like Austin, she’s given bionic parts after suffering a parachuting accident.
Her storyline is the main focus of The Bionic Woman, in which Wagner’s character goes on special missions for the government. The show was less successful than The Six Million Dollar Man, but it remains one of the best science-fiction adventure series of all time.
Martin E. Brooks – Dallas
During the last three seasons of The Six Million Dollar Man, Martin E. Brooks played Dr. Rudy Wells, Austin’s doctor and overseer while he’s undergoing bionic technology operations. He helps make sure that Austin’s bionic left eye, legs, and right arm function just right.
Brooks is best known for his work on the show, as well as The Bionic Woman. However, after playing Dr. Rudy Wells, he went on to play Edgar Randolph in 10 episodes of the popular 1980’s drama, Dallas. He is a government official who’s blackmailed by the show’s antagonist, J.R. Ewing (played by Larry Hagman). Edgar eventually suffers a mental breakdown, which has a convincing performance from Brooks.
Alan Oppenheimer – Rambo
Before Brooks played Dr. Rudy Wells, the role was portrayed by Alan Oppenheimer during the first two seasons. Oppenheimer would be more well-known for appearing in action series and animated shows, including the 1986 animated series, Rambo.
Based on the popular movie starring Sylvester Stallone, the show focuses on John Rambo’s (voiced by Neil Ross) special unit team, “The Force of Freedom.” Oppenheimer voices Colonel Sam Trautman, the team’s commanding officer. He would always be available to accompany Rambo on the challenging, dangerous missions.
Oppenheimer was also known for his roles as Jessie Smith on Big Eddie, Sheriff Pudge Trollsom on Trollkins, the narrator on Hero High, Warpath on Transformers (the TV series), Prime Evil on Ghostbusters (the TV series), Dr. Gates on Centurions, Professor Amadeus Sharp on Bionic Six, Vanity Smurf on The Smurfs, and a variety of characters on He-Man and the Masters of the Universe, Battle of the Planets, She-Ra: Princess of Power, and many others.
Jennifer Darling – The Little Mermaid And Other Disney Movies
Jennifer Darling played Peggy Callahan, Oscar Goldman’s secretary. It was a small recurring role, only appearing in four episodes, but fans remember her character. Darling later voiced a variety of characters in popular Disney and Pixar animated movies, including The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, A Goofy Movie, Pocahontas, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, Hercules, Anastasia, A Bug’s Life, Tarzan, The Emperor’s New Groove, Monsters, Inc., Lilo & Stitch, Brother Bear, Cars, and many others.
Darling didn’t voice recognizable characters in the movies, but she had a long-lasting relationship with Walt Disney Studios. In addition, she reprised her role as Peggy in The Bionic Woman, and played Amber on Centurions, Madame-O on Bionic Six, Irma Langinstein on Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle (the TV series), and voice roles in many other TV shows and movies.
Quinn K. Redeker – Days Of Our Lives
Quinn K. Redeker had a brief role as Frank on The Six Million Dollar Man. Only appearing in six episodes, Redeker would later be best known for playing Alex Marshall on the iconic daytime soap opera, Days of Our Lives. Alex is a charming conman who works hard to get away with his crimes.
Redeker also played the wealthy businessman Rex Sterling on The Young and the Restless. He found his calling working as a soap opera actor, and fans will always recognize him from the dramas.
Farrah Fawcett – Charlie’s Angels
During the run of The Six Million Dollar Man, Majors was married to Hollywood sex symbol Farrah Fawcett. Because of this, she guest-starred in a few episodes, most frequently playing Major Kelly Wood. Fawcett was a well-known model and actress, best remembered for her iconic role as the private investigator Jill Munroe on Charlie’s Angels.
Fawcett only played the character during the first season, but her performance and image were enough to make the show an international success. Everyone loved Fawcett, and she will forever be an icon from the 1970s.
