Last year, Timeless celebrated a miracle the weekend before the upfronts after NBC uncanceled the time-travel drama that Saturday. This year, it’s a nail-biting pre-upfront weekend with no word yet on the fate of the bubble drama ahead of its Season 2 finale tonight.
At NBC’s upfront call this morning, NBC chairman Bob Greenblatt was asked about the prospects of Timeless as well as midseason comedy Champions, which also has its renewal decision pending.
“We try to honor the producers, let shows run and see what they do before making a decision that is premature,” Greenblatt said, noting that Timeless’ finale is tonight and that Champions has a couple of more original episodes to air.
“We are hopeful and yet realistic as we have a lot of shows,” Greenblatt cautioned. “We are going to take a look at the shows after their run and hopefully make a quick decision on them.”
He later stressed that no decision has been made on Timeless.
In a Twitter post earlier this morning, Timeless co-creator/executive producer Eric Kripke wrote about the show’s renewal chances, “I’m nervous. Could go either way.” He called upon Timeless fans to tune in to the finale tonight and watch it live to give it a ratings spike, which is in synch with Greenblatt’s comments that a Season 3 decision won’t come until after the finale airs.
“FIGHT! This is up to you now,” Kripke wrote.
Timeless ranked as No.1 on USA Today’s Save our Shows poll for a second consecutive year. Additionally, the show’s fans have been flexing their muscles, flooding NBC’s Twitter feed with #RenewTimeless messages.
The revived series returned for Season 2 on March 11. Its numbers picked up close to where they had left off more than a year earlier, with a 0.8 in 18-49 and 3 million viewers (Live+same day). That was off by a fraction from its Season 1 finale (0.9, 3.4 million), which matched a six-week high.
But overall, numbers were down. In most recent ratings, Timeless averaged a 1.1 adults 18-49, vs. 2.2 for Season 1.
Created by Kripke & Shawn Ryan, the series launched with a mysterious criminal stealing a secret state-of-the-art time machine, intent on destroying America as we know it by changing the past. It then was up to a soldier (Matt Lanter), a history professor (Abigail Spencer) and a scientist (Malcolm Barrett) to use the machine’s prototype to travel back in time to critical events. Goran Visnjic, Paterson Joseph, Sakina Jaffrey and Claudia Doumit co-star.
Champions got off to a quiet start in ratings for its March 8 premiere with a 0.7 adults 18-49 rating and 2.7 million viewers (Live+same day) in its Thursday 9:30 PM timeslot. While this was a soft premiere delivery for a new series, Champions was just off from the preview in the time slot for fellow midseason NBC comedy A.P. Bio.
Created by Charlie Grandy and Mindy Kaling, Champions centers on Vince (Anders Holm), a washed up high school baseball star who reluctantly gave up his dreams to take over the family gym in Brooklyn. Vince lives with his sweet, naive younger brother, Matthew (Andy Favreau), and is on the verge of secretly selling the gym and moving to Florida when his high school fling, Priya (recurring guest star Kaling), unexpectedly drops off their 15-year-old son, Michael (J.J. Totah) on his doorstep. Fortune Feimster and Mouzam Makkar also star.
